How to Find the Best Dress For Prom

Do you want to be the most fashion forward person at prom? I am here to help you do that. Being fashion forward doesn’t mean you have to have the most expensive dress. It is all about how you style the dress to fit your personality, body shape and look.

  1. Determine your style:
Everyone has their own style. A way of dressing that feels the most you. Take a look at your closet. The pieces that you wear the most often are keys to uncover your style. Line up those pieces and try to use 3 key words that would link all those pieces together. For example, Girly, Lace and Floral / Dark, Graphic and edgy
  2.  Find the most flattering Fit/Cut of the dress for your body shape: This step is super important. Crop top and a maxi skirt might be the trendy thing to do right now. However if you are wider in the mid section crop top might not be the most flattering cut for you. If you are a perfect hour glass then princess ball gown will hide your curves and will not be the most flattering cut for your body shape. Make sure you go into different store and try on different dress shapes so you can determine  what is the best dress shape for your body.
  3. Pick a Flattering Color Scheme for your skintone: If you have a cool undertone (meaning your vains are blue or purple) then Jewel tone colours will look the best (Eg. pure white, black, royal blue and pink) If you have a warm undertone (meaning your vains are greenish/olive) then Earth tone will look better on you (Eg. Ivory, brown, orange and green).
  4. Accessorize: You don’t have to go over the top with accessories. Best rule to wearing accessory is to always take off 1 after you have finish with accessorizing. Most people tend to over accessorize. Another easy to follow rule is – Choose 2 our of 3 –  Meaning if you go with a necklace then you can either go with a bracelet or a pair of earrings (Never bother). So out of the 3 being necklace, earrings or bracelet you can only wear 2
  5. Look up Inspiration: If you are still stuggling feel free to look up fashion magazine, fashion blogger or celebrity for inspirations to help you look the best on your prom.
  6. Remember be true to yourself and wear something comfortable, you don’t want to spend the whole prom night trying to keep a dress from falling down. Here are some examples of creative prom dresses that is fashion forward this year:

Different Types of Denim Jacket

denim-jacket-detail-14047755In 1880,  Levi’s founder Levi Strauss created the first denim jacket. Back then, denim jackets were simple, often with a boxy masculine silhouette. Now denim jackets have become a very trendy stable worn by almost everyone I know and even celebrities.

I am here to break down the different types of denim jackets and how to wear them.

FANCY DENIM JACKET
I call this type of denim jacket fancy because you can wear it to a wedding if you wanted to (No I’m not kidding… you will see brides rocking denim jacket over white puffy dresses) The fancy denim jacket are often embellished with gems and sequins. A darker denim or white denim will elevate your fancy look. Opt for a short and tailored denim jacket to be worn over fancy dresses which won’t cover up the dress too much.

Try mix medium denim jacket such as denim jacket with leather sleeves; studded denim jacket or mix patch denim jacket.

Over-sized Denim Jacket
Over sized denim jacket have recently become very popular. This jacket creates an edgy and bad-ass look that will keep you comfy and stylish. Try styling it with leather leggings or distressed denim. Grab a toque and you look like you are not even trying, but so chic.

Denim Bomber Jacket
Bomber jacket has made a come-back recently. It is a short jacket similar to a flight jacket, but with a thick lining typically of sheepskin. However, designers have been experimenting using different materials to make the bomber jacket and that includes denim. The union of denim and bomber jacket created this adorable number. It is light and versatile, great for the Spring and Summer season.

I hope this this helps you out. And will encourage you the explore the world of denim jacket. It is such a stable and can be worn with anything.

doveThe Dovekeepers

By Alice Hoffman

In 70 C.E., nine hundred Jews held out for months against armies of Romans on Masada, a mountain in the Judean desert. According to the ancient historian Josephus, two women and five children survived. Based on this tragic and iconic event, Hoffman’s novel is a spellbinding tale of four extraordinarily bold, resourceful, and sensuous women, each of whom has come to Masada by a different path. Yael’s mother died in childbirth, and her father, an expert assassin, never forgave her for that death. Revka, a village baker’s wife, watched the horrifically brutal murder of her daughter by Roman soldiers; she brings to Masada her young grandsons, rendered mute by what they have witnessed. Aziza is a warrior’s daughter, raised as a boy, a fearless rider and an expert marksman who finds passion with a fellow soldier. Shirah, born in Alexandria, is wise in the ways of ancient magic and medicine, a woman with uncanny insight and power.

The lives of these four complex and fiercely independent women intersect in the desperate days of the siege. All are dovekeepers, and all are also keeping secrets-about who they are, where they come from, who fathered them, and whom they love (Available now).

Welcome to the Year of the Snake – How to celebrate Chinese New Year

snakeHappy Chinese New Year. The reason that Chinese New Year is in February because it follows the lunar calendar. The western calendar follows the sun whereas Ancient Chinese calendar follows the moon.

Celebration for Chinese New Year consist of a series of social, media and family tradition. There are certain food, practices and religious activities that people practise in order to ensure they can best prepare themselves and their families for the coming year.

The Chinese New Year celebration traditionally consist of 13 days in total. Although due to today's busy schedule Chinese New Years have been shorten to 5 days, however, it does vary in different countries.

The mythology/tale believed to start Chinese New Year is the fight against a mythical beast called the Nian (Chinese: 年 aka. year). Nian would come on the first day of New Year to eat livestock, crops, and even villagers, especially children. To protect themselves, the villagers would put food in front of their doors at the beginning of every year. It was believed that after the Nian ate the food they prepared, it wouldn’t attack any more people. One time, people saw that the Nian was scared away by a little child wearing red. The villagers then understood that the Nian was afraid of the color red. Hence, every time when the New Year was about to come, the villagers would hang red lanterns and red spring scrolls on windows and doors. People also used firecrackers to frighten away the Nian.

Today, the colour red continues to symbolize good luck and wealth in Chinese culture. People hang red papers writing good wishes in Chinese calligraphy on their door. Use fire crackers and perform dragon dance (symbolize the nian beast) Making lots of noises.

An Idiot's Guide to Hipster Living

Recently there is a boom of websites selling interesting interior decorations catering to the “Hipster” subculture. This subculture is still evolving and ever changing. However, according to Urban Dictionary, Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter. Although “hipsterism” is really a state of mind, it is also often intertwined with distinct fashion sensibilities. Hipsters reject the culturally-ignorant attitudes of mainstream consumers, and are often be seen wearing vintage and thrift store inspired fashions, tight-fitting jeans, old-school sneakers, and sometimes thick rimmed glasses. The “effortless cool” urban bohemian look of a hipster is exemplified in Urban Outfitters and American Apparel ads. Despite misconceptions based on their aesthetic tastes, hipsters tend to be well educated and often have liberal arts degrees, or degrees in maths and sciences, which also require certain creative analytical thinking abilities. Consequently many hipsters tend to have jobs in the music, art, and fashion industries.

Hipster interior decoration websites/blogs are:
Caviar 20
Restoration Hardware
ZGallerie
Hipster Home
Hipster online clothing & shoes stores consist of:
Nasty Gal
Wasteland
Solestruck
Anthropologie
LuLu’s
Modcloth
Pixie Market
Urban Outfitters
Topshop
If after visiting these sites, the desire to become even more hipster is still there then here are some interior decoration tips to make anyone a true hipster.

hipster-home 1. Get a clock on the wall – not just any clock – one with the weirdest design that will make anyone go “WTF?” The more un

practical the better. For example, a clock without numbers or a clock that is not in a shape of a circle.
2. Find a letter in the alphabet and just hang it on the wall – Random letters with cool texture just screams creativity. You can also get a bunch of vintage frames or mirrors and do some sort of DIY like spray painting it gold and just collage them together. The more random and diverse the frames are the more hipster looking it will become.
3. Brick wall something. Brick wall indoors is just so rebellious and…. wait for it…. so hipster. In this case there is a column in the middle of the room that is made out of brick. Feel free to grab a hammer and beat it up a little bit. Remember, old stuff screams hipster.
4. Print a bunch of Tumblr or Instagram photos preferably pictures of rocks, eyes and sun set. Turn them black and white and hung them on a cloth line.
5. Bicycle is… a form of transportation? Sorry, that is no longer true. To hipster, they are wall decor.
6. Having a closet is sooo mainstream. Being a hipster is all about displaying your clothes on a clothing rack – makes it easier to put together outfits.
7. Macbook on the floor.
8. Homemade rug or looks like homemade rug.
9. Magazines about bands no one has ever heard of stack together on the floor as decoration.
10. Vintage camera – it does not have to actually be able to take pictures
11. Technology that looks old such as a typewriter, but it is actually an Ipad dock.
12. Overpriced tumbler cups everywhere
13. Last, but not least… Vintage big frame glasses – HIP…S…TER – with a mustache necklace will be even better.
